Cherokees Struggles Continue With Loss to North Paulding

This will be the last week of basketball for several teams before taking a holiday break.

The biggest riser from last week is undefeated North Forsyth, which jumped from No. 19 to 6 after a 3-0 week.

The rankings cover all classifications.

SBLIVE'S GEORGIA TOP 25

1. Holy Innocents' (9-0)

Last week: 1

The Golden Bears had a great week, beating two ranked teams (Buford and Brookwood) by double digits. Their only game this week is a Saturday matchup with their neighbor Riverwood (3-6).

2. Kell (8-0)

Last week: 2

Kell stayed perfect with a win last week over Pope, and it won Monday over Lassiter. The Longhorns have a couple of weeks off before their next game Dec. 28 against Shiloh (2-4).

3. St. Francis (6-2)

Last week: 3

The Knights rolled past Lakeview Academy 74-31 in their only game last week. They return to action Saturday at the United Bank Holiday Invitational in Myrtle Beach, where they take on J.L. Mann (South Carolina) in the first round.

4. Mount Paran (6-2)

Last week: 5

Mount Paran won 61-49 last week over Marietta, the struggling-but-recovering defending 7A state champion. It was a solid win for the Eagles, who play at Tallulah Falls (5-2) on Saturday.

5. Jefferson (9-0)

Last week: 6

The undefeated season continues for Jefferson, which picked up double-digit wins over Madison County and Trinity Christian last week. The Dragons put their perfect record on the line this week against region foes Cedar Shoals (6-1) and Flowery Branch (4-3).

6. North Forsyth (10-0)

Last week: 19

The Raiders make a massive leap in the rankings after going 3-0 last week with two wins over ranked opponents. Most notably, they knocked off then-No. 4 River Ridge 63-58, but they also beat No. 25 West Forsyth (7-2) and Lambert (4-6). They host Forsyth Central (0-11) on Tuesday before taking a couple of weeks off for the holidays.

7. River Ridge (7-1)

Last week: 4

River Ridge defeated region opponents Sequoyah and Riverwood last week before losing to North Forsyth 63-58 in a battle of undefeated teams. The Knights play Tuesday at North Paulding (6-2), and then have two weeks off before their next game Dec. 28 against Walton (2-6).

8. Buford (6-2)

Last week: 7

The Wolves lost by 12 points to No. 1 Holy Innocents' last week but recovered with a win over Harrison (6-2). They have two more games this week, as Peachtree Ridge (5-2) and Lanier (1-7) visit Buford Arena.

9. Woodward Academy (8-1)

Last week: 14

Woodward went 3-0 last week, including a 82-78 win over Hoover, one of the top teams in Alabama. The War Eagles play Cedar Grove (1-3) and Galloway (6-2) this week in their final games of 2021.

10. Carrollton (7-0)

Last week: 11

The Trojans remain unbeaten following big wins over South Paulding, Rome and Villa Rica. This week, Carrollton resumes region play with games against Paulding County (3-9) and East Paulding (2-4).

11. Brookwood (7-3)

Brookwood held its own in a 72-59 loss to No. 1 Holy Innocents', and the Broncos won their other two games last week against Sprayberry and Wilson Academy. They have one test this week, a road battle at No. 19 Greater Atlanta Christian.

12. Maynard Jackson (4-1)

Jackson went 2-0 last week in region games against Lithia Springs and Chapel Hill. The Jaguars host New Manchester (5-4) on Tuesday in their only game this week.

13. Forest Park (6-1)

Last week: 13

The Panthers cruised to region wins over Jonesboro and Banneker and fell just short against Sparkman (Alabama) for their first loss this season. They have a chance to start a new win streak this week with games against Drew (0-6) and Stockbridge (8-1).

14. Luella (9-1)

Last week: 16

The Lions continue to steamroll opponents, winning by an average of 35.7 points per game. In their three wins last week, they won by a combined 169 points. Luella plays at Fayette County (4-4) on Tuesday before taking a break for the holidays.

15. Woodstock (6-3)

Last week: 8

Woodstock picked up region wins over Alpharetta and No. 22 Cherokee, but it dropped in the rankings because of a loss Saturday to No. 25 West Forsyth and some big wins by teams that were below them.

16. Grayson (8-1)

Last week: 18

The Rams moved up two spots after defeating Rockdale County and Troup County last week. They face Creekview and No. 22 Cherokee this weekend prior to a week off.

17. Cross Creek (6-0)

Last week: 17

Cross Creek defeated Laney for the second game in a row last week and followed it up with a win over Cedar Shoals. In their one game this week, the Razorbacks play at North Augusta (6-1).

18. Hebron Christian (8-1)

Last week: 15

The Lions were handed their first loss by a Marietta team that struggled to start the season, but they bounced back with wins over two Tennessee teams, Girls Prep and Baylor. Their only game this week is against Shiloh (2-4).

19. Greater Atlanta Christian (6-2)

Last week: 20

Following a loss at No. 18 Hebron last week, Greater Atlanta Christian bounced back with double-digit wins at Redan and Sandy Creek. In their final game before a two-week break for the holidays, the Spartans host No. 11 Brookwood on Friday.

20. Lumpkin County (7-1)

Last week: 21

The Indians won by 44, 17 and 20 points in their three games last week. They take on region opponents Gilmer (3-4) and North Hall (6-2) this week.

21. Elbert County (8-1)

Last week: 23

Elbert County won by double digits in all three of its games last week. The Blue Devils put their six-game win streak on the line this week against Stephens County (0-10), Hart County (3-5) and Madison County (1-5).

22. Cherokee (7-3)

Last week: 22

The Warriors stayed put in the rankings after picking up a region win against a solid Roswell team, edging out South Forsyth and falling 63-59 to No. 15 Woodstock. Prior to a short break over the holidays, Cherokee plays North Cobb (5-2), Pope (3-4) and No. 16 Grayson (8-1).

23. Campbell (7-3)

Last week: 9

Campbell followed up its first loss of the season with a rough week that saw it lose to a pair of unranked teams in North Paulding and Marietta. The Spartans ended their three-game skid with a 68-35 win over Hiram on Saturday, and they have this week off.

24. Archer (8-2)

Last week: 24

The Tigers bounced back from a loss to No. 4 Mount Paran with a 70-point win over Berkmar and a 38-point win over Meadowcreek. They should have some tougher tests this week with games against Discovery (7-3) and Norcross (7-1).

25. West Forsyth (7-2)

Last week: Unranked

West Forsyth joins the top 25 following a 55-48 win over then-No. 8 Woodstock. The night before, the Wolverines nearly gave North Forsyth its first loss of the season but fell 49-44. West Forsyth, led by senior guards Cayla Cowart and Callie Thrower, takes on Lambert (4-6), Johns Creek (4-4) and Walton (2-6) this week.
